The measles are back!

After measles outbreaks had almost completely disappeared during the general protective measures as part of the coronavirus pandemic, measles is on the rise again worldwide. On November 14, 2024, the WHO (https://www.who.int/news/item/14-11-2024-measles-cases-surge-worldwide--infecting-10.3-million-people-in-2023) reported a 20% increase in cases worldwide in 2023 compared to 2022 to 10.3 million. At the same time, 22 million children have missed their first measles vaccination, although they are considered a particularly vulnerable group.

In this context, the Robert Koch Institute has also updated its guide to measles (https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/Infekt/EpidBull/Archiv/2024/Ausgaben/46_24.pdf?__blob=publicationFile).

It is particularly important for clinicians to “think about it” when dealing with this highly contagious disease. The guide contains information on optimized diagnostics as well as protective measures and how to deal with contact persons, especially in communal facilities.
